Amethyst is a member of the Quartz family. Found in abundance in the silver mines of Guanajuato, Mexico, in Brazil and in Uruguay.
Amethyst forms large, hexagonal, prismatic crystals. It is prized in the jewelry trade for its vibrant colour and clarity. Other members of
the Quartz family include Citrine, Smoky and Rose Quartz, Aventurine and Tigereye.
Many types of Quartz are utilized in the making of glass, radio and telephone manufacture.
Amethyst is the birthstone for February.
